THE SCHOOL : The Children
The School was established to make provision for children who were unable to thrive in a mainstream environment.
As the founder, Baroness Linklater, said, "These children require specialist provision for their education; by this we mean children who find mainstream schooling a real struggle, but who would not be suitably placed in the range of special provision currently available".
The children tend to have been:
- unhappy at school;
- unable to establish and sustain friendships;
- isolated and withdrawn;
- showing evidence of low self-esteem;
- under-performing academically;
- failing to participate in, and engage with, the wide range of school activities.
Such evidence of failure to thrive may be due to:
- moderate learning difficulties resulting from dyslexia or dyscalculia;
- Aspergers syndrome or high functioning autism;
- dyspraxia;
- dysphasia;
- school phobia;
- bullying;or,more likely
- a combination of some of these conditions.
